We Choose our Emotions and not vice versa

I don't have a link on this post but just a thought. My belief is that we choose our emotions and that is what differentiates them from instincts. Instincts are physiologic/neurologic responses that function much like a reflex in the musculoskeletal system. If x happens then y reflex occurs. Now its not quite the same because it does appear that there is a wider range of responses to an instinctual stimulus than to a reflex producing stimulus such as a reflex hammer in a doctors office. However generally the principle holds.

Our emotions on the other hand have are controllable and that control is completely resting with us. I was reminded once more today that we have the power to choose our emotional response no matter what difficult situation we are presented with. This simple concept in my mind separates the men from the boys when it comes to how we operate our lives.

Next time you are presented with a stressful or difficult emotional situation remember that you always have the power to choose your emotional state and that it is not controlled by someone else.

Have a great weekend.

Thanks for this gentle reminder!

It is healing to realize that each joy and each pain that we as human beings experience, adds another beautiful dimension to the tapestry of our lives. Embracing that without judgements and without fear brings stillness to our hearts. We then can be able to have a heart full of gratitude for all the beauty that life has to offer. No feelings or emotions are foreign to the human condition and that is why this reminder is so powerful. Thank you!

"Peace - It does not mean to be in a place without noise, trouble, or hard work. It means to be in the midst of those things and still be calm in your heart."

God created emotions for human beings but that does not mean we can't be in charge of them. Thank you Dr. Clouthier for this post! How true this is and yet we all struggle in this area and need constant reminding.

I heard a wonderful reminder today in a movie. We need never ever feel abandond because God can't abandon Himself and we can't abandon ourselves either. When we feel so alone and afraid, we can call on God and He will always be there for us...always!

Emotions are good...they are apart of who we are. Instead of condemning our emotions, it would perhaps be better to accept them as part of us. It is okay to feel a broad spectrum of emotions. It's truly okay!

I have fallen in a hole of pain and sadness that I'm having a hard time coming back out of. I can't stop crying, I can't sleep well. I'm really trying to apply this principle...I know it well. Yet, it seems so difficult right now. I feel so weak and tired!

in your posted data about yourself, you use the term
Alternative Physician

the term PHYSIIAN relates to A Medical Doctor, MD
how can you be an alternate to that?
Dr. O
